I realize today is Monday, but I haven’t posted any favorite books for two weeks now because it’s been so busy around here. So I’ve got a two-for-one on a Monday! My mom happened to pick this book up at a thrift store before Jonah was born and the first time I read it, I cried.
Even after a dozen reads, I still get goose bumps. This is a wonderful book for teaching kids about different cultures and races and it has a great message of tolerance and understanding. It is just the message I want to give to my son as we raise him in a country different than our home countries. After talking about all the differences among us, this is the part that gets me the most:
“Joys are the same, and love is the same. Pain is the same, and blood is the same. Smiles are the same, and hearts are just the same-wherever they are, wherever you are, wherever we are, all over the world.”
And here’s the two-fer:
This is a grown up book, but one that I think a parent can appreciate. Mamas, if you’ve ever felt like you are going stir crazy just give this a read and you will feel so thankful for all your freedom! It’s about a woman who was kidnapped and then she gives birth to her kidnapper’s baby. She raises him in a tiny room that they are never allowed to leave-talk about stir crazy. They hatch a plan to escape and you’ll have to read to find out what happens.
